On January 14th 2017 Timepoint Ensemble returns to the John Dutton theatre, boasting a program made up entirely of Calgary premiers. Laboratorium is an incredibly unique opportunity to hear two of the many paths that French music has taken since the time of Ravel and Debussy because it showcases two of France's most prolific composers, Grisey and Globokar. During his studies in Paris Gérard Grisey used computers to study the timbre of acoustic sounds, which quickly gave rise to the compositional technique of Spectralism. A technique that presents sounds as if they were each individual flowers ever so slowly unfolding as they are touched by the morning sun. In direct contrast to this the music of Vinko Globokar is full of explosive energy that conveys a strong sense of spontaneity through the unorthodox use of classical instruments.
